Barak Zelig – Biography
Barak Zelig is a surrealist multidisciplinary artist working with hybrids, metamorphosis, and illusion to make social and political comments.
Barak studied Drawing and Painting in Ramat Gan, Israel; BA Visual Arts at the Australian National University; and Postgrad Dip in Design and Animation at the University of Technology Sydney.
Barak's media are printmaking, drawing, photography, and, mainly, sculpture in steel and found objects.
Barak has exhibited in Australia and overseas since 1988. In 2013, he began to reuse motifs from his 2-dimensional artwork to create his sculptures, allowing him to explore new dimensions and themes, enhancing the narrative and visual impact of his work.
Barak won the 2014 Re-Use Award – Clearwater Prize, Queanbeyan, and the 2018 Staff Choice Award and, again, the 2019 Staff Choice Award and Commended Award, respectively, in Hidden Sculptures, Rookwood.
In 2013, Barak was commissioned to create a stainless-steel sculpture as a gift from Israel for the Canberra Centenary.
Barak has participated in sculpture exhibitions such as Sculpture @ Show Canberra, North Sydney Art Prize, Sculpture Bermagui, Lake Light Jindabyne, Hidden Rookwood Sydney, Yarra Valley Arts/ Yering Station Sculpture Melbourne, Sculpture in the Valley Kangaroo Valley, Contour 556/18 Canberra, Sculpture for Clyde Batemans Bay, and others.
His works can be found in national, corporate, and private collections.
